When was the last time you took a vacation? But during that vacation, did you find yourself checking in at work, maybe logging in to check your emails? So, when was the last time that you really took a vacation from work and really got to focus entirely on you and enjoying life?

If it’s been a while, it is time to plan a trip away so that you can rejuvenate and come back feeling refreshed and ready to accomplish even more.

These are all very important issues.  They’re not just a matter of shrugging off or pretending they are a problem for another day.  Instead, these can be solid barriers that determine outright that you and your family will not be taking a sailboat around the world for the next month.  However, this doesn’t mean that you can ignore the health reasons you should take a vacation or have to skip taking any trip at all.  Here are some great alternatives to consider this year.

1 Focus on Quality

When you won’t be taking a traditional type of dream vacation to a luxury Mexican villa rental or to a European city with hundreds, if not thousands of years of history to discover, focus on planning your time off around quality.  Remember the health reasons that you should take a vacation and plan your time off around meeting those needs.  This means creating quality leisure time for yourself.  Sure, some of it might include simply sitting still and binging a show for several hours in a row but plan some activities that are meant to stimulate and relax you in other ways, too.  Consider the activities available to you and think about the benefits they will bring you.

2 Take the Time When You Can

Of course, the ideal is to be able to take the time off when it aligns with the rest of your family or with your friends.  That said, it’s not always possible. Instead, take the time when you can.  Embrace using some of that time alone.  Time on your own can be healing and rejuvenating.  It can prepare you to enjoy the moments you do have with the people you love.  Many of us never even consider heading out on a hike, walking through a park, or checking out some local sites on our own.  Take a walking tour of a local town or even of a community in your own city.  Then, when you can spend one of your vacation days with your family, you’ll have some great stories to share.

3 Take a Short Road Trip

Instead of planning a road trip across the state or even across the country, think in terms of what you can cover in a day.  Head out in a different direction each day, if you have several days to spare.  You can either have a glance online and plan some stops to discover or simply see where the road takes you.  If you enjoy driving and doing a bit of local learning, you may find that this is just as great for meeting the health reasons that you should take a vacation as a trip around the world.  Even stopping at farmers markets and fruit/veggie along the way can make you feel connected to your part of the country in a way you never have before.

In life, it is all about the balance, so working all the time could lead to excess stress and an unhealthy lifestyle.
